Puma Clyde Tommie Smith Gold List - #1

Continuing with more Olympic-inspired shoes, Puma honors Tommie Smith with these gold Puma Clydes. Smith’s 200m dash record is on the tongue and metallic gold medals are embossed throughout the shoe.

Two sets of laces are included with “1968″ appearing on the tips. Smith won the gold medal in the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. On the podium, the newly crowned Smith (along with Bronze medalist John Carlos) raised his fist in the air, which set off a firestorm of controversy. The barefoot athletes’ black power salute was meant to represent black poverty. The two were booed by the crowd and the Olympic committee thought politics had no place in the Games. Smith and Carlos were stripped of their medals and banned from the Olympic village. This led to many protests in the U.S. and Smith and Carlos were never given back their medals. • Nike ACG Wildwood and Terra Ninety
By on August 22nd, 2008 | No Comments Comments

The Air Max Terra Ninety is a combination of the Air Max 90 and Terra Humara. This will cost around $130 per pair. The color scheme is black/ white/ grey/ red. The toe box is grey and this extends right to the back of the heel. The mudguard around the toe box is grey. The shoe lace braces are red with thin borders of black on both edges. The grey tongue has a black tag with grey colored words. The last two pairs of shoe lace holes are held by a panel of black colored, corrugated leather. The mid section of the shoe has a dense net. The Nike swoosh is only a small portion. The midsection has a thick mudguard in purple. This purple panel has geometric patterns printed on it in silver or grey ink. The backtab at the top of the heel has a black panel of leather with a corrugated, horizontal line pattern. The top layer of the midsole is black. The middle layer is transparent and the bottom layer is black again.

The Nike ACG Wildwood is a lightweight trail runner. One pair costs $82. The toe box and midsection is white. The mudguard is black with geometrical prints. The midsole is white and grey, while the outsole is black. The Nike Air Max Terra Ninety has a more complicated design and is more interesting. These two pairs of shoes will be released in November.

  • Black Star Nike Dunk Lows
By on August 22nd, 2008 | No Comments Comments

KJax22 has posted another pair of interesting custom Nikes at Nike Talk (linked here). These Nike Dunk Lows feature images of Talib Kweli and Mos Def from the cover of 1998’s “Black Star.” This initial collaboration between the two hip-hop artists was loved by a lot of people including the designer.

The problem for KJax22 is that the homage to “Black Star” is a bit off the mark. If I didn’t know these shoes were based on “Black Star,” I would think they were an awesome pair of shoes with some fine touches. KJax22 tried to replicate the profile images of Talib and Mos Def from the album cover. These portraits lack enough definition to show that they are the beloved hip-hop artists in question rather than well-drawn look alikes.

My bigger issue with these shoes is that the colors aren’t connected to the green, yellow and red hues used on the “Black Star” cover. The green, blue and burgundy on KJax22’s work are nice but they don’t contribute to any sort of tribute to the hip-hop duo. These shoes are fantastic out of context but it doesn’t seem like they match up the designer’s stated intent.

Greedy Genius Cool Breeze Vaders Designed by Bun B - #1

The highly anticipated Cool Breeze Vaders from Greedy Genius are set to be released in Mid September. These shoes were designed by hip hop artist Bun B as a tribute to Pimp C, who died in a Los Angeles hotel room a couple days after a performance last December.

Pimp C apparently died from an accidental overdose of Promethazine/Codeine “syrup” along with a pre-existing medical condition, sleep apnea. Apnea causes breathing to stop during sleep. An overdose of syrup also allegedly caused the death of rap producer DJ Screw.

These slick shoes feature a black leather upper trimmed with silver/grey accents. The tribute to Pimp C is evidenced with the RIP Pimp C keychain included. Look for more details about these sneakers from Greedy Genius in upcoming weeks.
