  • Kasper da Ghost Air Force Ones
By on October 16th, 2008 | No Comments Comments

Sol Sircuz created a pair of Nike Air Force Ones with a ghost theme just in time for Halloween. His client was named Kasper which led the designer to apply a “Casper the Friendly Ghost” theme along with some Halloween colors. While these customs were one-of-a-kind, you can contact Sol Sircuz at [email protected] or check out his MySpace page linked here if you want to make your own customs.

Sol Sircuz drew “Kasper” on the left toe box as a balling ghost complete with wrist bands and a basketball. He wrote out “Kasper da Ghost” along the heel with a mixture of orange, white and blue paint. The tongues feature vague impressions using gray, blue and orange that really caught my eye.

My favorite part of these Air Force Ones was the small details and accents added after the design was complete. In particular, the blue outline of the gray swoosh makes it stand out from the muted Halloween hues.

Sol was not concerned about the conventions of working with a shoe’s natural boundaries. He was willing to expand his ghost outside of the toe box and eschewed convention to write “Kasper da Ghost” over several colors. These customs show that designers need to get creative with their clients’ specifications, work outside of the box and add their own flavor when making sneaker art.

  • SlamJam x Nike Air Force 1 – red & grey colorways
By on October 15th, 2008 | No Comments Comments

The SlamJam and Nike Air Force 1 Premium have another release in red and grey colorways. The shoe upper is made of crinkled patent leather. Wellgosh is taking preorders on this pack of sneakers. The price is £140.00 (€196.00).

The toe box is surrounded by a high mudguard. There are perforations in the toe box. The tongue is red leather. At the tip, the tag is white, with red lettering. The shoe lace is white and there is a lace lock that is red, half way up the laces. The inner lining is white padding. The other white accent on the shoe is the Nike swoosh. It is a thick swoosh. The midsole is thick and white. The outsole is white and has concentrated threads. This is good for the winter season as it affords better grip. The red colorway looks like a strong color. It will be welcomed during the Christmas season.

The grey colorway of this SlamJam and Nike Air Force 1 Premium looks good too. It is a classic shoe with the sleek design and looks. Grey is always a good neutral color to use and it goes with virtually every color of the wardrobe. Crinkled leather tones down the look of leather so that it does not look too loud.

  • Major Air Force Ones
By on October 15th, 2008 | No Comments Comments

I have been talking about simple but effective sneakers over the last few weeks including a pair of customs from High Off Life Kicks. The designer’s latest pair of Air Force Ones does a 180-degree turn on the simple aesthetic of his past customs. The Major Air Force Ones were found at the High Off Life Kicks Customsnkr.com blog linked here.

High Off Life Kicks went a bit overboard when creating the Major Air Force Ones. He started out with a basic black panel along the back with a set of messy white stripes that were endearing. As I looked at the rest of the shoe, I wasn’t sure what message High Off Life Kicks was trying to send.

The toe box has a white/gray/black camo design that is rendered effectively. The eyelets and swoosh are coated in a black polka dot pattern set against a light gray background. The heel tag and front panel features an interesting collection of overlapping black lines on a dark gray backdrop.

If High Off Life Kicks used each of these patterns on separate pairs of shoes, I would have been impressed with his work. I thought that the Major Air Force Ones looked like a sampling of the designer’s skills rather than a cohesive work of sneaker art. While I am not impressed with these shoes as a whole, I think that the designer could use these sneakers as the starting point for a series of new designs.
