“I had a couple pairs of Jordans and Air Maxes over the years, but I couldn’t really afford a ‘collection’ until I started my first job out of college in 2003. I had been following LeBron James pretty closely the last 2 years of his high school career, and I figured why not spoil myself and represent “Team Lebron”; so I set out to get a pair of “First Games”. I didn’t really know there was any after-market value or anything until a while later. I just liked LeBron and the shoes were dope! Plus, I wouldn’t get shot over them, like my Dad always told me I would if I got Jordans. The “Lebrons” commercials were another one of those moments I got a little more interested in kicks. Commercials were hilarious, and the concept shoes were pretty cool. I didn’t get crazy about Lebrons or collecting until 2005, when I found out about NikeLebron.net. That really messed me up. Seeing the PEs was crazy and seeing that they were on eBay set off a light bulb. I was hooked. I found Nike Talk the following year, and it was over. Since then, I have compiled a good amount of PEs (30-40), but I have a very special place for the General Releases. I have about 130 or so pairs of LeBrons, and another 70 Jordans, Dunks, Kobes and KDs. Being from Madison, there were almost NO Jordans or limited anything, so I appreciate the online Saturdays a lot as well.”

The Good – Doernbecher Freestyle Decade

The 2013 Doernbecher Freestyle collection marks the tenth anniversary of the program, and Nike is celebrating with more sought after styles and designs by some incredible young people. Salute to Nike and OHSU for the continued excellence of the program and its support of the Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.

The first “Doernbecher” Jordan was actually the second silo. Leading off the storied string of Jumpman stamped sneakers for a great cause, the Air Jordan 2 brought the famed franchise into the OHSU realm. Then 15-year old Sheridan Brenton placed his school colors on a black base, popping with a paisley print and his favorite proverb. After going through numerous surgeries to repair an arm that had been detached during a car accident, his story and spirit remains inspiring and his shoes still stand as stylish. There are many awesome “Doernbecher” Jordans, but we’d like to see the first ones return. Bring ‘em back!

For the first time, Nike is including the iconic Nike Air Foamposite One in their special “Doernbecher” Collection. Inspired by Elijah Diggins, a 14-year-old baseball fanatic who has had to deal with Burkitt’s Leukemia, this Foamposite One tells a story. Elijah’s design includes his personal smiley-face logo that turns into his initials when viewed sideways, and a fiery red and black color combination that represents his favorite basketball player, LeBron James. This special sneaker’s sockliner features a chain-link graphic that represents a silver bracelet that his parents gave him before starting chemotherapy, and Japanese characters on the tongue stand for courage, all finished off with Elijah’s John Hancock. Included with the vivid Nike Air Foamposite One “Doernbecher” is a windbreaker and hat to complete the collection.

After the successful launch of Isaac Arzate’s Air Jordan 5 “Doernbecher,” Nike and OHSU have just unveiled the entire 2013 Doernbecher Freestyle Collection. Sportswear silos and apparel showcase creative colorways and courageous stories. The Nike Air Foamposite One and a matching windrunner jacket lead off the lineup, dressed in red and designed by Elijah Diggins. The Foamposite is inspired by his favorite athlete, LeBron James, and carries many personal details. Kira Smith displays her love for Victorian fashion on the Nike Dunk Sky High and tank, while her twin sister Kate throws nods to her personal style and warrior spirit on the Nike Roshe Run and AW77 Hoody. Jake Dering and Bela Stone both use the Nike Free Run 5.0 as their canvas, seeing inspiration from their respective loves of dancing and singing. Ross Hathaway displays his love for action sports on the Nike SB Zoom Stefan Janoski, while versatile athlete and ultimate MJ fan Daniel Pena caps off the collection with his take on the Air Jordan 10. In celebration of the tenth anniversary of the Doernbecher Freestyle program, Nike Global Product Creative Director and longtime Doernbecher Freestyle Designer Mark Smith has created a special collection featuring the Nike Dunk High. The shoe honors all of the patients involved in the program over the years by featuring their names and glow-in-the-dark elements that symbolize their strength and spirit. Two sets of the collection, seen in detail below, will be auctioned at special events in Portland and New York City to benefit Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.
