Sneaker Swap 2013 promises to herald something different in the world of sneaker conventions and trade shows. It will be held in the city of San Diego on Saturday 13th April, 2013. SoleRedemption caught up with Lamarae Dangerfield and Timothy Sheppard, founder and co-founder, respectively, of this event for an interview via email. Published below for your perusal.
1.) How was the idea of Sneaker Swap 2013 born?
Lamarae: The idea of Sneaker Swap was born after realizing Sneaker trade shows/conventions never make it here to San Diego. After years of wanting and even inviting certain shows to come to San Diego, a mutual friend introduced Tim of A07 and I. From that day we brainstormed, bounced ideas back and forth with and end result that is to be seen next weekend. The whole process has been really fun.
2.) How is this sneaker show different from the others that take place in America?
Lamarae: This sneaker show is different because it was made specifically for the city of San Diego. Sponsored by San Diego brands, filled with San Diego sneaker collectors/brands, and all with the intention of building and up lifting San Diego.
Tim: Sneaker Swap puts an emphasis on the actual buy sell and trade amongst sneaker colllectors alike. A jewel that we feel has been tarnished over the years.
3.) What are the winds of change blowing here in San Diego with respect to urban culture?
Lamarae: San Diego’s urban culture is really blossoming in my opinion. The rise of local artist, opening of new stores and shops, beginning of new brands, and of course the collaborative effort in executing the sneaker swap are all signs that San Diego has been and is continuing to build its own identity.
Tim: San Diego has always had an urban identity however, our market has been overshadowed for years. With regards to our thriving sneaker community, we are bringing something that lets everyone know that, “hey, we can compete and we have cultures, enthusiast, collectors, and taste-makers out here just like everyone else does”.
4.) What do you hope to achieve with Sneaker Swap?
Lamarae: With the Sneaker Swap we hope to bring the sneaker/art/fashion/music enthusiast together, allow the city to enjoy and reap the benefits of an event of this kind, but most of all The Sneaker Swap wants to give back to those in need. Build and support the city, give back and do our best to make a positive change.
Tim: I would like to see Sneaker Swap educate and entertain all who are interested in helping San Diego as well as Southern California grow.
5.) I believe this is the first time that you are holding this event, and it is a big event, were there any teething issues that you had to overcome?
Lamarae: With all that anyone does they will have to overcome certain obstacles, whether it be they’re first time or 10th. The most important part is to have fun and find the lesson learned. I can say that I’ve learned a lot while planning and organizing the Sneaker Swap. I’ve enjoyed all of the people met, relationships built and all of the new opportunities gained. I’m ready to apply what was learned this first time around, and to start the process of planning the next event.
Tim: I have no complaints. When you put yourself in a position to achieve great things you welcome all challenges and obstacle. It helps with our maturation process.
6.) Can you throw some light on the major sponsors and how they agreed to come aboard?
Lamarae: All of the sponsors loved the idea of the event. We offered them all a free booth in exchange for them showing up, promoting the event, and offering promotional items for free giveaways. They’ve all been extra helpful and supportive during this journey, offering advice and recommendations on how to make the event better. We’ve received a lot of support from non spongers as well. All in all I’m thankful for everything everyone has done in order to make this event happen. From A07 and the sponsors to everyone who spread word and told friends, it is all appreciated.
Tim: We simply ran the idea by everyone one involved and they embraced it wholeheartedly. I also think that our focus on uplifting San Diego also played a role being that the majority sponsors our local brands and establishments.
