The 1997 National Championship Arizona Wildcats team was one for the ages. Not only did they complete the daunting task of defeating three #1 seeds, including college blue bloods University of North Carolina and Kentucky, but they wore some of the most memorable kicks during their run. We had the chance to sit down with the 1997 Final Four Most Outstanding Player and current ESPN Analyst, Miles Simon, to discuss that “Simon Says” National Championship team, their kicks, and the debut of the Nike Air Foamposite One.
Nice Kicks: How did your Arizona team approach the 1997 tournament when faced with defeating three #1 seeds on your way to the National Championship?
Miles Simon: We were just a very confident group. We didn’t feel that anybody was better than us, even though our record was 19-9 going into the tournament. We felt that our talent was very good with Jason Terry, Michael Dickerson, Mike Bibby, and myself.
Nice Kicks: What do you remember most about that tournament run?
Miles Simon: First, beating the three #1 seeds. For me, the most memorable game was the Kansas game in the Sweet 16 where no one gave us a chance because Kansas had been so dominant all season long. If you think about that game, how many guys played in the NBA from that game? You talk about (Kansas players) Jacque Vaughn, Paul Pierce, Raef LaFrentz, and Scott Pollard. Eight players played in the NBA from that one game.

Nice Kicks: Back then most teams wore sneakers from their team bank selection. However, your team wore a variety of sneakers. Was Coach (Lute) Olson a bit less strict regarding what you guys wore during games?
Miles Simon: Coach Olson didn’t care. As long as it was Nike, Coach was cool. He didn’t care if it was black, white, purple, or whatever. He allowed us to play with whatever was comfortable. I think with Mike Bibby and myself being big sneaker guys, we couldn’t wait for the newest Jordans, Team Jordans, Jason Kidds, or Air Max Uptempos. If we could get our hands on anything new and fresh, and be the first one to sport it, that’s kind of what we did.
Nice Kicks: Speaking of Mike Bibby, one of the most memorable moments for sneaker enthusiasts is Bibby wearing the “Royal Blue” Foamposites in the 1997 National Championship game. What was your initial reaction when he brought those out?
Miles Simon: Well, we all had them. All the starters and Jason Terry, we all had them. We got them at either the Elite 8 or Sweet 16 game. Our Nike rep gave them to us. A funny story is I ended up playing for the Orlando Magic with Penny (Hardaway) 15 months later, and we wore them before they were out on the market. We wore them before Penny wore them! He told me that it was actually great marketing for him because we won the championship.

Nice Kicks: If all of you had them, why was Bibby the only one to wear them in the game?
Miles Simon: I didn’t wear them because they were too slippery. I put them one to go through shoot around and practice, and they were just too slippery. I think Jason Terry felt the same way. Mike Bibby was just like, “Forget that! These are hot, and I’m going to wear them no matter what.” [laughs]
