For many out there, diminutive Lionel Messi is already an all-time great good enough to be spoken of in the same breath as Maradona and for the small number of doubters, a World Cup win should be enough to convince them.
But adidas pays homage to this modern-day great and super striker playing for Barca by releasing his signature collection with his first signature cleat — the adidas Messi adizero F50.
These will drop on the 1st of March and will retail for $220.
Here’s the official adidas release:
Messi’s 5.8 ounce signature adizero F50 is among the lightest in soccer and features personalized design details including his logo, name and mantra “give all for your team.”
“After setting a scoring world record and winning his fourth consecutive FIFA Ballon d’Or, Lionel Messi has truly earned icon status in the world of sports,” said Ernesto Bruce, director of soccer for adidas America. ”We are proud to celebrate Messi’s accomplishments with a signature collection showcasing technology and design that mirror his ferocious speed and natural, fluid style of play. The adidas Messi collection brings together the best in performance technology with world class design.”
The adizero F50 Messi design is a striking combination of red and white – red being Messi’s favorite color and representative of the danger he poses on the field and his fiery passion for the game. The clean white frame of the cleat symbolizes the lightness of his adizero F50 and Messi’s movements which complement the speed-inspired graphics that represent his blistering pace. On the sole, a single red stud stands out amongst 10 white studs which represent Messi alongside his teammates and his philosophy of only being as strong as the team around him. Messi’s name and logo grace the cleat and “give all for your team” appears on the insole.
Messi’s adizero F50 cleat highlights his signature adidas performance collection, which includes a black and matte silver woven jacket, training jersey, short and graphic tee, all featuring his logo and mantra.
Messi was involved in every aspect of the two-year development of his signature range, which included 10 major testing rounds and analysis of his natural movements on the field. Messi’s input, personality and instincts led the design of his signature adizero F50 collection. Messi joins adidas icons David Beckham and Derrick Rose in having signature ranges.
Messi’s signature adizero F50 cleat features a textured and synthetic SPRINTSKIN upper designed to elevate performance in all weather conditions. This water wicking material and an elevated ridge patterning allows water to slide off the cleat rather than be absorbed-keeping the foot dry and the cleat light even in heavy rain. The cleat’s SPRINTFRAME adds support to the heel for stability in cuts and acceleration while a new internal SPRINTWEB provides exceptional ball control at high speeds and a supple but stable construction for ease of lateral movement.
