Last weekend, Nike surprised us all with the release of the Nike LeBron X+ “Crown Jewel”. Only released at a select few locations, the model was first admired for its fireberry upper and grey accents. However, with most releases from Nike, the “Crown Jewel” as it became known, represented much more than just a sneaker, but a collection of ideals, a brief look at history, and one of the greatest to ever play the game of basketball.
To begin this story, we first have to go back in history a bit. The name “Crown Jewel” is derived from the actual Crown Jewels in the United Kingdom, more specifically, the Sceptre with the Cross. The royal piece includes First Star of Africa, the largest diamond (530.2 carats) cut from the Cullinan Diamond by Joseph Asscher of Holland, the premier cleaver of his time. This same care was taken with the design of the Nike LeBron X+ “Crown Jewel”. The shoe represents LeBron’s 10 year history with Nike, as well as a leap forward in design. Armed with a full-length Zoom Air Unit as well as the diamond cut Hypefuse upper, Nike has created a silhouette fit for the unique playing style of LeBron James. The “Crown Jewel” represents the first look from the Nike LeBron X+ “Diamond Collection”, with many more to come.
