Oscar Pistorious recently made a history as world-class sprinter in the London Olympics. Not because he ran the fastest, but just because he ran. In addition to being a world-class sprinter, Oscar is also a double, below-the-knee amputee. In order to race, Oscar wears a pair of Össur’s Flex-Foot Cheetah legs, J-shaped carbon fiber prostheses, that fill in for feet and calves. However, for the Olympics, Oscar needed to have spikes installed in order to compete on a level playing field. Fortunately he is sponsored by Nike who sent designer Tobie Hatfield, the creator of the Nike Free, to South Africa to work with Oscar to craft a solution. After several test, some contact cement, some Phylon, a three-hour treadmill session, and months of work, the Nike Spike Pad was born.
