Into the Archives - Sneaker Geeks

Today, we kick off our newly developed column titled Into the Archives. In this throwback feature, we will highlight one of our classic features that coincide with something/someone relevant in the sneaker community today. The sneaker community’s undivided attention was focused on the re-emergence of the Nike MAG this month, therefore, we decided to revisit one of our Sneaker Geeks installments. In December 2008, we constructed a feature themed around the best movie inspired sneakers ever created. In case you missed it three years ago, check out our “Best Movie Inspired Sneakers” feature, which includes sneakers inspired by Dawn of the Dead, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Transformers and many more.

  • This Day In Sneaker History: Vince Carter’s Memorable Dunk in the 2000 Olympics
By on September 25th, 2011 | No Comments Comments

“Thanks for the shoes. They really work.” – Vince Carter

The quote featured above is a note Vince Carter supposedly faxed to Nike after the 2000 Olympic games in Sydney, Australia. After involving 7’2″ French center Frederic Weis in the “le dunk de la mort” (the dunk of death), who wouldn’t think it was the shoes? The 6’6″ Vince Carter, wearing the Nike Shox BB4, drove to the basket, took flight, and dunked over on Weis in what may be the most memorable Olympic basketball moment ever. The U.S. team went on to win the gold medal that year; however, the “le dunk de la mort” may be more unforgettable than the actual gold medal to many. If you recall, Nike re-released the Shox BB4, a shoe that incorporated Nike’s Shox technology (16 years in the making at the time), in its original colorway at select spots during the summer of 2009. Do you vividly remember this day in sneaker history?

Aside from the solid base it possesses, the crisscross strap along the midfoot is the most prominent feature of this basketball shoe. The Flywire panel which sports tonal threading makes the technology a well-mixed element that blends with the tonal upper.
