Casio Computer Co., Ltd was founded by the late Kashio Tadao in Mitaka, Tokyo. First called Kashio Seisakujo 1946, he first subcontracted to process microscope parts and gears. His younger brother, Toshio was a naturally inventive person and was trying out new ideas like the “yubiwa” (finger ring) pipe that allowed the postwar Japanese to smoke their unfiltered cigarettes down to the last bit. Success with this invention, perfected in Tadao’s factory, gave the brothers enough capital to explore something else. They set their sights on a completely electric calculator, an improvement on the fully manual available ones that were being sold at that time.

The whole Kashio family became involved with the endeavor. Tadao and his 3 brothers were able to reduce the computer relays the calculator required from several thousand to 342 and developed a dust-resistant calculator with a number pad with the numerals 0 to 9, like the pocket calculators used today. This revolutionary idea gave birth to the office calculator and launched the company onto the international scene.
The company came into a small minor crisis in the 1960s when a British firm released an electronic calculator powered by transistors. After an initial shock of finding themselves behind the technology, they came out with a secretly developed electronic calculator, which was widely hailed even if the design was not perfected yet. The development of an electronic calculator with memory put them ahead of the field again and that was the last time Casio was ever behind in electronics.

It is indeed making a name for itself in another sort of venture.
Their digital music instruments are among those considered the best in the world. Starting with the Casiotone 201 in 1980, it’s never looked back. The first electronic keyboard, digital synthesizers with distortion, the Sampletone (the first synthesizer with a sampling function), an electronic guitar with the full range of tones, and the digital horn have made sure that Casio is one of the first picks for a serious or budding musician.
