Monarch Butterfly Van Half CabsBy SneakerFreak on January 11th, 2009 | No Comments
Designer Candi Kaye Johnson from Team Sneaker Vixen turns old and new shoes into pieces of sneaker art. Johnson works out of a Washington D.C. studio to make custom sneakers that fit the personalities and preferences of clients throughout the United States. The Monarch Butterfly Van Half Cabs shown in this post demonstrate the designer’s ability to make good customs without using tons of design elements.
The base shoe is a light gray Van Half Cab with dark gray toe box. Team Sneaker Vixen chose the monarch butterfly as a primary design element that would stand out from this bleak canvas. On the toe boxes, Johnson painted off-center monarch butterflies including a part of a butterfly’s wing on the left toe box to imply motion. The sides of both shoes have full-sized images of monarch butterflies, standing out in orange and black glory from the plain gray background.
You can learn more about Team Skate Vixen’s work at the Facebook page linked
here. While the Monarch Butterfly Vans do not do justice to the designer’s superior design skills, they are successful at showing her craftsmanship. Just like the experienced chef asking young students to show their skills by making simple omelets, sneaker artists reveal their strengths and weaknesses through basic customs. -

Nike Skateboarding January 2009 ReleasesBy SneakerFreak on January 11th, 2009 | No Comments
Nike Skateboarding January releases are an exciting collection. There is a wide range of colors to cater to every taste. Please look for these shoes at
Nike to buy them. The Nike Zoom Air Veloce releases offer a simple black/white colorway and a white/black/red colorway. The black/white shoe has a suede upper. The swoosh is leather. The back of the heel is covered in netting fabric. The collar of the ankle has a thick fabric. Its partner in black/white/red has similar features. The red accents make the white upper look brighter.
Nike P-Rod 2 has a black forest and lemon drop colorway. This offers the traits of the Paul Rodriguez signature shoe. The black forest green is a good color for spring. The lemon yellow portion has a pattern on its leather to make it look textured.
The Premium Blazer has a purple colorway with black Nike swoosh. The leather is “grainy” in appearance and outstanding on the plain purple suede.
The “Twin Peaks” Dunk Hi is all black with minimal accents. I like the embroidered figure as the best feature on the shoe. The seams are outlined in green thread to highlight the portions. (
